The Leader and the Follower

Remember that you need to train your courage first before you can train your confidence.

You might ask me why. That's a valid question.

Think of the relationship between courage and confidence as that of a leader and a follower.

Who is the leader?

It’s courage, of course. Courage leads the way for progress. It's the force that breaks barriers and faces the onslaught of oncoming obstacles. You're able to wield courage as your weapon or as your shield.

Confidence is the follower. It's the army that the leader needs to keep making progress. Imagine a battlefield, and the leader is running head-first into enemy territory all by himself. What is he going to gain? He might as well give up and call it a day because he is definitely going to lose. Courage serves more as the initial inspiration, motivation, and taking that first step. But with that, you also need substance to follow through.

Now imagine that the leader has the power of an army behind him. He’s definitely going to feel more confident facing the enemy. Moreover, the more well-trained the army is, the more confidence he’ll have. In other words, the more you train your skills and knowledge, the more confident you will feel.

When you have a sense of assurance coursing through your mind, you believe in your ability to handle problems. This is a vital character trait to possess as it helps you to keep your cool and not panic when things don’t go your way.

Once you have gained a certain degree of command over your courage and confidence, it is then time to build a certain strength as well.
